La Palma: Eruption Cumbre Vieja

Eruption of Cumbre Vieja on La Palma in September 2022

On September 19, 2021, the eruption began on La Palma. In the northwest of Cumbre Vieja opened 2 fissures, each about 200 m long. Lava fountains fed lava flows that reached the settlement of La Paraiso within a few hours. By the following day, more than 100 buildings were destroyed.
The eruption announced itself by a seismic crisis of 8 days duration.
The eruption lasted until mid-December. Within 90 days, lava flows destroyed 2988 buildings and buried 92 km of traffic routes. A lava field with an area of 12.4 square kilometers was created. 494 million cubic meters of lava were produced. This corresponds to 0.494 cubic kilometers, which is already a considerable volume. In historical times, it was the longest eruption of Cumbre Vieja.

Pacaya: Drone shots from January

Eruptions of volcano Pacaya in Guatemala during my stay in January 2020. I climbed the McKenney crater and stood up in front of the active hornito. Lava spattering and mild strombolian eruptions took place. A episode with a lava flow was the highlight of this day.

In the spring of 2021, the volcano’s activity increased significantly. A series of smaller paroxysms occurred, producing ash clouds rising to an altitude of 3800 m. A short eruptive fissure developed on the lower western flank of Mc Kenney cone. Lava flows up to 3 km long flowed down the volcanic slope and reached farmland. Some buildings were destroyed.

Kilauea: Leilani-Eruption in 2018 – Part 1

Kilauea’s Leilani-eruption took place on Hawaii and begun in May 2018. The lava lakes in the craters of Halema’uma’u and Pu’u O’o drained off through the east rift. A dyke intruded on the coastal plain near Pahoa. In Leilani-Estates more than 25 fissures opened. Lava fountains fed lava flows that reached the ocean. Several hundreds houses were destroyed. In this video you can see huge lava fountains.

Fuego and shooting stars

Eruptions of volcano Fuego in Guatemala. This footage shows a timelapse with eruptions and shooting stars above the volcano. The Fuego dominates the city of Antigua. It forms a double volcano with Acatenango. In 2018, pyroclastic flows caused destruction and claimed more than 300 lives.
